Get Out The Math Tiles!

One thing my little boys love to do is get out the math shape tiles.

I have a bucket from Nasco of Plastic Pattern Blocks that we got, long ago.

Yesterday, for the severalth day in a row, they boys wanted the math tiles out.

Do you think they are learning all kinds of good mathematical concepts using the tiles to make Bionicle Adventures?

Here's the primary builders - note how in this picture the Visorak "caughted the disc in his claw!":

Is this how math works in other homeschooled homes?

It sure is! It's an "integrated math and art" lesson, don'tcha know.

in our public school in math center, the first grade boys make spinning tops out of the Unifix cubes and spin them against each other to see whose is the strongest.

Last weekend some kids and I were playing with pattern tiles and I feel like I learned some geometry and physics; we were trying to build things vertically with them.

My kids thought that was the coolest example of math...ever!

What is with the Bionicle names? When Little Miss H rattles them off, she sounds like she is speaking a foreign language.

Yes! That is how it works at our house, too. We used Cuisinaire rods, which are very colorful, and my daughters loved to build towers with them. Giggle! That's a great memory!

Looks like they are having so much fun. They did a great job. Keep having fun and don't tell them it's school! : )

Another comrade fallen to the Bionicles!! *laughter* I'm so glad to know it's not just my son who is obsessed with Barraki, Toa Jaller, and all the other things that provide a friendly choking hazard to my baby girl and a sharp break from sanity for this mom.

That said... I love the disk in the claw pic!
