When Did They Discontinue Camel Snot Brown?!?!
So today a painting job estimator dude came by. A very nice young man. Doing the College Pro Painters thing. He's a writing major at my alma mater. Which is not really my point here.
So ... I looked in vain for the match to our current house color:

Since when did they discontinue "Camel Snot Brown" ???
Well, if I can't have my camel snot, I may as well go for something strikingly different.
I must admit to being tempted by the Electric Lime - who knew exterior paint came in so many lovely colors? And it would certainly make for a unique house.

Some of the colors had exceedingly stupid names. Some were a bit too "clever" for my tastes. Do you think this color would never change, despite how much sin and evil went on inside the house?

So, in the end, here's my top for contenders. White trim, blue-gray paint. Yeah, I know, you were hoping *I* would do the lime green, so you could say you know a crazy lady who painted her house lime green. But ... I like the deep colonial blue-gray. You'll have to be your own crazy lady. Or gentleman. Depending on your gender.

Clockwise from upper left:
Sporty Blue, Bracing Blue, Distance, and Denim.
Stay tuned, sometime in June, for the final verdict.

oh, wait, a little blast from the past -- I found these old pix from a few years ago, before whacking out all the bushes, when I was dreaming of a slate gray house. It doesn't quite look like this now, but oh well. Close enough.
the house, then:

the house, then, photoshopped to a slate gray:

What do you think??
I picked up some paint chips the other day in a very pale grey - their names were 'winter snowstorm' and 'grey blizzard'. And I thought to myself, why? why would anyone pick those names for the colors, because there is no way on earth I want to paint my house to look like snow, or dirty snow!
And I wondered if there were any openings for paint-chip-namers. Because I would love that job. Do you have to be a poetry major to qualify for the job?
I like the dark grey. I think I'd like it better one or two shades lighter. It's pretty the way it is too though. And great photoshopping!
Posted by: kelly at April 5, 2008 2:18 PMYeah, I like Distance too. The dark gray. I'd like it a tidge darker, but not as dark as the one below it.
My in-laws have a DARK brown house and lots of trees in front. We call it the "Stealth House". To find it, you aim for the spot in the street where it looks like there is no house.
Electric Lime is awesome. I painted a set of trash picked chairs and table a similar color. They're on the front porch now and they make me so happy. It's that color!
Posted by: Chris at April 5, 2008 5:10 PMWe like Distance too. The darker color is very striking!
Posted by: Erin at April 5, 2008 6:34 PMI vote for Denim and second for Distance. I like the contrast between the darker color and the light trim.
Posted by: karen at April 5, 2008 9:23 PMI like Denim. I like how the gray makes the house stand out from all the brown and green, but it's less, um, organic? BTW, I have electric lime paint in my schoolroom (where the computer is.) It's pretty intense. When we first moved in I was SURE I'd have to paint over it. I love green and all (it's my favorite!) but this is INTENSE in an over-caffeinated way. But, I just covered most of it with maps, bookcases and completed work and now it's INTENSE in a messy way.
Posted by: Peggy at April 6, 2008 9:19 AMI love the photoshopped grey! If it was a tinge bluer it'd be the color of my house... ; ) However, I much prefer the grey tints to the blue ones.
Posted by: Erica at April 10, 2008 11:27 PMThe Distance is nice. My preference is for Bracing Blue. The added benefit is during a clear blue sky, your house will be difficult to find. You will be living off the grid on nice, sunny days and Skynet will not know where to find you.
Posted by: Justin at April 11, 2008 1:28 PMI like the slate grey. I like the green, too, but it would clash with the trees and shrubs. What about slate grey, with accents of a brighter color on the shutters?
Posted by: Linda at April 14, 2008 10:05 AMi like the slate grey. but i do think it would look nice in green with yellow trim...john deere :D
